Asbestos Abatement for Commercial Buildings

Asbestos Abatement for Commercial Buildings

Of all the hidden hazards in commercial buildings, one of the most serious is asbestos. The mineral was a popular addition to many building products for decades and is believed to still exist in nearly 110,000 buildings throughout the United States.

What is Asbestos and Why is it Dangerous?

Asbestos is a mineral commonly found in rocks and soil. Because of its natural properties (e.g., heat and fire resistance), it was mined and used in the creation of many construction materials in the 1960s and 1970s. Common asbestos-containing building materials include floor and ceiling tiles, wall lining, insulation, and roof shingles.

When left alone, asbestos-containing products are not dangerous. However, when such products are disturbed - which is often the case of a natural disaster or, in our case, demolition work - the fibers can be released into the air. If they're inhaled, they can embed into the lung tissue. Over time, the lungs may scar and become inflamed as a result. In many cases, asbestos exposure leads to cancer.

Our Approach to Safe Asbestos Abatement

We know the dangers of asbestos exposure, which is why we take all the appropriate measures to ensure that it's abated safely and responsibly before beginning commercial demolition. Here's what you can expect when you work with Alpine Demolition for asbestos abatement:

  • We'll conduct a thorough inspection of the property and test materials for asbestos. If asbestos is present in the property, we'll take the appropriate steps to abate it.
  • We'll start by disabling HVAC systems to prevent spread through ventilation. We'll also contain the area, and install decontamination enclosure systems and negative air pressure units.
  • Our workers will wear all the appropriate PPE to keep them safe as they work, including respirators, disposal coveralls, gloves, eyewear, and boots.
  • Asbestos waste will be properly sealed in air-tight containers, labeled appropriately, and transported to appropriate landfills.

Regulatory Compliance and Certifications

At Alpine Demolition, we follow all federal and local laws and regulations surrounding asbestos abatement. We follow the Asbestos National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants that's required on all abatement projects and also follow all Illinois regulations. We are licensed and certified as an official asbestos removal contractor by the Illinois Department of Public Health, which ensures we meet the strict training and practice standards needed to carry out abatement in a safe manner.

Signs Your Commercial Building May Contain Asbestos

Some common signs that a property may contain asbestos include:

  • It was constructed before the 1980s when the use of asbestos-containing materials was rampant.
  • It has flooring tiles in 9-inch squares.
  • There are coverings or corrugated wrap paper on pipes.
  • The property features popcorn ceilings.
  • The building is abandoned.
